Talk About 50 Shades of Grey

Feb 24, 20150 CommentsAccent Colors, Neutral Palette

We recently went to The Galapagos Islands and visited Bartolome and Santiago Island. Most of the islands were formed by earthquakes and volcanoes that erupted and poured forth lava. The Lava formations on these islands are incredible with patterns and rhythms that form designs in its own sculptural world. It is eerie and made me think I was walking on another planet, a planet of grey and earth tones. From a distance the islands look black and desolate. But when you start walking on the lava you see wonderful colors, especially grey, with at least 50 shades. Here are a few examples of the patterns we saw.

I also loved the lava that had some color caused by oxidation. Usually the lava was broken up into large chunks and this gorgeous color filled the cracks. It made me think of  color palettes I could use that incorporate these natural color wonders. Because they surprised us with their intensity and placement, I thought of them as accent colors.

Here’s a sample palette that is inspired by the lava. It is sophisticated, neutral, and the accent color gives it punch.
