This room had several uses. Mostly it was a study and office. It was a long narrow room filled with books and art. There were so many interesting things to look at in this room that it was hard to know where to begin. It needed a focal point, a place for your eyes to stop. The use of a strong color would help create that focal point. But which wall to accent? The architecture of the room had some interesting features. A sloping ceiling line started from the entrance doorway and [...]

You Are My Sunshine

By |2018-12-19T15:04:58-05:00May 26th, 2013|Case Studies, Light Colors, Living and Family Rooms|

You Are My Sunshine is the name of a Benjamin Moore Color I recently used for a client. The house was completely decorated and the clients wanted to repaint and freshen things up. The living room furniture was patterned in bright yellows and blue. The walls were painted a pale blue that didn't seem right. It made the room too cool. We chose Benjamin Moore 302 with the above name which transformed it into a warm inviting atmosphere. We painted the woodwork pure white which made the yellow stand out beautifully. The [...]

Adding Pizazz to an Entrance and Stairway

By |2018-12-19T15:15:07-05:00April 4th, 2013|Accent Colors, Case Studies, Dark Colors, Hallways|

We were using a similar palette throughout the first floor, warm beiges in darker and lighter shades. The client wanted to do something a little different somewhere. I suggested to paint the wall going up the stairs in the entrance an accent color. You would see it from the living room which would add some drama and pizazz to the look of the house. Red Accent Wall with Beige Walls We chose Benjamin Moore HC50 Georgian Brick. On the landing at the top of the stairs was a niche. I [...]

Shades of Grey for Powder Rooms and Baths

By |2018-12-21T09:53:13-05:00March 23rd, 2013|Bathrooms, Case Studies, Dark Colors, Neutral Palette|

Three different clients and three different bathrooms. Each required a different approach. Yet we used grey in each one. From a deep charcoal grey to a taupe grey to a very light grey this neutral color in thousands of shades is most versatile. The first bathroom was part of a master bedroom suite. The tiles were a light neutral color without much character. The vanity was a cherry wood with a deep granite countertop. We decided to accent that deep granite color by choosing a charcoal grey for the walls. Now the [...]

Choosing a Color to Compliment Bed Linens

By |2018-12-19T15:25:27-05:00January 23rd, 2013|Bedrooms, Case Studies, Light Colors|

One room I recently consulted for was completely empty. It was to be a guest bedroom but there was no furniture in the room at that time. The client showed me some linens she had recently bought and thought she would use in the room. Blue Bedroom with Yellow Accents Working from those linens we chose the color for the room. The linens were a floral print of blues and yellows. We decided to choose a light blue that complimented the blues in the floral print and would give the [...]

A Different Color For A Front Door

By |2018-12-19T15:28:54-05:00January 17th, 2013|Case Studies, Dark Colors, Exteriors|

Continuing the topic of exterior colors, a client recently wanted to do something a little different with their front door. The house was grey with white trim. The door was also painted white. They wanted to make the door different but not garish. Purple Door on Gray House We chose Benjamin Moore 1414 Super Nova which is a dark purple/grey. It is a very deep, rich, and muted color that harmonizes beautifully with the grey shingles. Choosing a color for your front door that is a little off the beaten [...]
