Almost Black

Repainting a bathroom that had charming old white tiles with black trim around the edges, we decided to paint above the tiles with a deep dark color. But what to choose? Almost any color would work since the basic palette was black and white. We liked the idea of using colorful towels with the simple bathroom, and thought painting the walls black would be a cool color to use. Choosing the right black was the hard part. We painted the trim around the door and window with a semi-gloss black which was [...]

Gray and White Bedroom with a Touch of Purple

A client I had worked with before called me to help redo her bedroom. It was an old house and the walls were stucco, not in good condition. The first suggestion was to cover the existing walls with sheetrock to improve and update the room. What a difference that alone made.

I was asked to design a wall unit for a living room that included a media center. The client hated what she had on the wall and directed me to an use units from an Italian modular furniture company called Presotto. She sent me various catalogs to work from. One of the most unusual and interesting furniture units was part of Presotto designlife 2014 catalog. Here's how the company describes their furniture units called InclinART. InclinART, an exclusive modular furniture system that changes the basic rules that govern furniture. Its axis becomes variable and the depths of the tops change [...]

Paint it Black

I really like the idea of using black or almost black as a wall accent color. I have used it in my home and absolutely love it. Here is a photo of my bedroom with one wall painted black. The wall is actually glazed and there is a fine texture on the wall. But because it is subtle it is hard to see in the photo. The bed looks like it is floating because of the black bed skirt and the black ground carpet. The room is dramatic and inviting. Black Glaze [...]

Soft and Lovely Color Palettes

By |2018-12-19T14:30:34-05:00August 24th, 2014|Accent Colors, Dark Colors, Light Colors, Neutral Palette|

I was recently sent a 2014 special issue by Sherwin Williams about their paint and colors. Included in this brochure were several color palettes. Two of them stuck me as not only beautiful but usable in many home or business situations. Although some of the palettes were bright and colorful I could not imagine using them in most homes. I believe that most people want soft soothing colors on their walls to function as a background rather than shout out "look at me". I have found that most of my clients want to come into their homes and feel [...]

A Color Palette For A New House (Part III)

By |2021-12-02T14:18:38-05:00February 11th, 2014|Accent Colors, Bedrooms, Case Studies, Neutral Palette|

We are now going upstairs to the second floor of the new house where we find the bedrooms, more baths and a home office. As you may recall, this house was being painted before furniture and fabrics were chosen so the palette had to be neutral. The only colors we had to work with were floors and carpeting. The master bedroom suite had a light beige, off white, carpeting and we chose Benjamin Moore 990 Hampshire Taupe for the walls. We also chose window shades in a similar tone. This color has [...]
