Almost Black

Repainting a bathroom that had charming old white tiles with black trim around the edges, we decided to paint above the tiles with a deep dark color. But what to choose? Almost any color would work since the basic palette was black and white. We liked the idea of using colorful towels with the simple bathroom, and thought painting the walls black would be a cool color to use. Choosing the right black was the hard part. We painted the trim around the door and window with a semi-gloss black which was [...]

Wide Horizontal Stripes

Using wide horizontal stripes in similar colors but different finishes is a great choice to add sophistication and subtle depth and dimension to a room. A client with a bathroom that had old subway like tiles in a creamy yellow color wanted to do something interesting with paint in her bathroom. The trim tile was black. We thought that keeping the color palette for the walls the same as the tiles would enhance the old world feel of the room and create a quiet calm effect. Choosing a color to match the tiles was the hard [...]

Long Distance Color Consulting (Part II)

In this post I will be discussing "long distance color consulting" that I did for a client building a new house in the Adirondacks. It was too far to travel and we decided to choose colors not on the actual site.  It's a challenge because colors change in different lighting and all the things the client chose like tiles, bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinets, etc. were things I would see only in pictures. She did have a few actual samples of tile for me to see which was very helpful. Part II is the discussion for [...]

That is we chose colors not on the actual site. It's a challenge because colors change in different lighting and all the things the client chose like tiles, bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinets, etc. were things I would see only in pictures. Purple Master Bath

How did we come up with a purple master bath? This was a new house construction. It was a large traditional house. We chose colors for most of the rooms  that were soft and subtle with a good flow from room to room. When we came to the master bedroom suite we continued choosing colors that were muted and soft, colors that went beautifully with the carpeting and bedding. But when we came to the master bath the client wanted something different, something that would stand out but not knock you out. She [...]

Using Stencils and Glazes

By |2018-12-19T14:29:35-05:00September 13th, 2014|Bathrooms, Case Studies, Dining Rooms|

Sometimes clients ask me to help choose wallpaper for a particular room. Trying to find just the right colors as well as the right pattern can be difficult. Sometimes the answer is not choosing wallpaper at all but customizing color and paint techniques to get the desired effect. Here are two examples of using a stencil and a glaze over it. This is a dining room with wainscoting and crown molding. We wanted a brocade design that had an antique look to it. We chose a large pattern stencil that would be repeated around the entire [...]
