A beautiful new house needs a fabulous new kitchen, and this one doesn't disappoint. Well designed, all spanking new with a drop dead gorgeous marble counter top. Who could ask for more? Gold Walls White Cabinets in Kitchen Let's start with the counter tops. The touches of blue within the warm browns and beiges just make this marble stand out as unique and exciting. Here's a close up. In addition, the back slash tiles chosen picked up the iridescent quality and colors of the counter. Here's a close up. The cabinets [...]

Using Stencils and Glazes

By |2018-12-19T14:29:35-05:00September 13th, 2014|Bathrooms, Case Studies, Dining Rooms|

Sometimes clients ask me to help choose wallpaper for a particular room. Trying to find just the right colors as well as the right pattern can be difficult. Sometimes the answer is not choosing wallpaper at all but customizing color and paint techniques to get the desired effect. Here are two examples of using a stencil and a glaze over it. This is a dining room with wainscoting and crown molding. We wanted a brocade design that had an antique look to it. We chose a large pattern stencil that would be repeated around the entire [...]

An Unusual Room

By |2018-12-19T14:31:22-05:00August 11th, 2014|Case Studies, Hallways, Light Colors|

I will call it the Map Room. Going up the main staircase to the bedrooms of a new house is a room at the top of the landing off the main hallway with two large window openings (no glass) that overlooks the staircase. The intention is to have a place on that floor where kids can play or the family gather. It is clearly not a bedroom because there is no door to close and it is open. The client installed a large map that covers one wall that you see as you enter. The [...]

A Guest Bedroom and Bath

By |2018-12-19T14:32:12-05:00July 25th, 2014|Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Case Studies, Neutral Palette|

This lovely new 4 bedroom house had one of the bedrooms designated as a guest bedroom. It was across the hall from a bathroom that was shared with the two other children's bedrooms. In other words the bath would be used by children as well as adults who would be the guests. The clients did not want to create a bath designed for children that looked juvenile but wanted something more sophisticated that would be appropriate for guests as well as their children as they grew older. The furniture in the guest [...]

Painting and Decorating Two Boys’ Bedrooms

By |2021-12-02T14:06:16-05:00July 15th, 2014|Bedrooms, Case Studies|

Both brothers were under age 6 and the mother wanted the rooms to be decorated in a way that could grow with the children. In other words, nothing too juvenile. Both rooms were quite large and we could use color in an interesting and fun way to highlight the size of the rooms and/or accent a wall. For the older boy we chose a warm neutral beige for three of the walls. This beige was picked up by the carpeting chosen for the floor. On one wall we chose a navy blue [...]

Displaying Tchotchkes, Hanging Art and Photos

By |2018-12-19T14:34:56-05:00June 8th, 2014|Case Studies, Wall Arrangments|

Over the years I have had clients who have asked me to help them hang art, family photos and awards in their homes. As an artist I have had much experience hanging art shows in galleries and museum spaces. In addition to the regular color consulting I do, I enjoy these projects immensely. Recently a client who I helped with a color consult showed me many small sculptures and momentos she had accumulated on her travels over years. She wanted to display them but didn't know how to or where. There was a coroner [...]
