The Perfect Grey for the Bathroom

Medium Gray Walls in Bathroom A client called me for a color consultation to help choose a color for the new bathroom they had just remodeled. She wanted the color to be grey, but couldn’t find the right grey. The little glass tiles that were a border around the room had lots of blue in it when you looked close. She was looking at blue greys which just weren’t right. I felt that choosing a simple grey with almost no blue cast would be the right way to go. [...]

Red Dining Room

Dark Red Walls in Dining Room Sounds bold and daring, doesn’t it? As the photograph testifies it is quite beautiful. We were choosing colors for the whole house.  Given the furnishings, we could get away with painting the entire downstairs shades of a warm beige or gold color. But the client was willing to try something different. The location of the dining room was the perfect place to add some color. We chose Benjamin Moore 2084-20 Maple Leaf Red, a warm terra cotta that was just perfect. The room [...]

Now that’s a scary thought. Actually, painting a room red can be a wonderful way to bring warmth and drama to your home. The key word here is room not rooms. Too much of a good thing is too much. However, the room should be thoughtfully planned out. You don’t want it to look like a dungeon. If the walls are dark, the woodwork and moldings should be light. That will make the wall color pop. [...]

Difficult Rooms With Dormers and Eaves

If you live in an older house, the upstairs bedrooms can have dormers, eaves, or unusual architectural elements that make painting more difficult. How to handle those unusual rooms? Dark Blue Accent Wall in Guest Room In the guest room above we highlighted the area of the dormer by painting it a deep blue. It emphasizes the area for the sleep sofa and makes it stand out. The rest of the room is painted a warm gold color. The red of the sofa brings out the reds in the rug [...]

Dark or Light Color for Trim

By |2018-12-19T20:35:00-05:00December 3rd, 2011|Accent Colors, Bathrooms, Case Studies, Dark Colors, Light Colors, Living and Family Rooms|

Trim is the molding around doors, windows, floor, and sometimes ceiling called crown molding. It is also called woodwork. Traditionally, molding is painted a light color, white or off white. If your walls are painted a deep color, painting the molding white will make the wall color pop and be a nice contrast. If your walls are painted a very dark color it is probably better to use an off white instead of a stark white. You don’t want a blinding contrast just a nice gentle one. If your rooms open into [...]
