A Very Versatile Color

I recently was called by a client who wanted to paint her entrance hall, stairway, and upper hall. It was a center hall Colonial house that didn't get much natural light. On either side at the entrance were the living and dining rooms. It had been painted years before in an off white yellowish color that was not very inviting and looked blah. The living room had a subtle wallpaper on the walls in a pale pale green color. The dining room was a deep gold color. The carpeting on the stairs [...]

Using an Accent Color in a Study/Office

This room had several uses. Mostly it was a study and office. It was a long narrow room filled with books and art. There were so many interesting things to look at in this room that it was hard to know where to begin. It needed a focal point, a place for your eyes to stop. The use of a strong color would help create that focal point. But which wall to accent? The architecture of the room had some interesting features. A sloping ceiling line started from the entrance doorway and [...]

You Are My Sunshine

You Are My Sunshine is the name of a Benjamin Moore Color I recently used for a client. The house was completely decorated and the clients wanted to repaint and freshen things up. The living room furniture was patterned in bright yellows and blue. The walls were painted a pale blue that didn't seem right. It made the room too cool. We chose Benjamin Moore 302 with the above name which transformed it into a warm inviting atmosphere. We painted the woodwork pure white which made the yellow stand out beautifully. The [...]

Choosing a Color to Compliment Bed Linens

By |2018-12-19T15:25:27-05:00January 23rd, 2013|Bedrooms, Case Studies, Light Colors|

One room I recently consulted for was completely empty. It was to be a guest bedroom but there was no furniture in the room at that time. The client showed me some linens she had recently bought and thought she would use in the room. Blue Bedroom with Yellow Accents Working from those linens we chose the color for the room. The linens were a floral print of blues and yellows. We decided to choose a light blue that complimented the blues in the floral print and would give the [...]

Repainting a Kitchen

Beige with a Pink Tone for Kitchen and Breakfast Room This kitchen needed to be painted. The client was tired of the dark peachy color that now looked dated. The first thing I noticed was that the crown molding had never been painted and was a decorative element that now needed to be addressed. I suggested painting it the same color as the rest of the woodwork. It would open up the space and give it a light airy feeling. I chose Benjamin Moore OC-17 White Dove. The window shades [...]

Dark or Light Color for Trim

By |2018-12-19T20:35:00-05:00December 3rd, 2011|Accent Colors, Bathrooms, Case Studies, Dark Colors, Light Colors, Living and Family Rooms|

Trim is the molding around doors, windows, floor, and sometimes ceiling called crown molding. It is also called woodwork. Traditionally, molding is painted a light color, white or off white. If your walls are painted a deep color, painting the molding white will make the wall color pop and be a nice contrast. If your walls are painted a very dark color it is probably better to use an off white instead of a stark white. You don’t want a blinding contrast just a nice gentle one. If your rooms open into [...]
