Neutral Color Palette for Tudor House

The task was to find the perfect neutral color palette for a Tudor House. It was a old Tudor with brick, stone, siding, stucco, and the traditional trim. Doors and windows also needed painting. The clients wanted a look that would lighten the dark appearance the house had but not veer from the classic Tudor look. We started with choosing the lightest color for the stucco. We wanted a creamy beige that would brighten the house and be neutral enough, not too yellow, not too grey. We chose Benjamin Moore OC40 Albescent. [...]

Terra-Cotta and Natural Stone Exterior

Here's how we arrived at choosing terra-cotta and natural stone for the exterior of this house. The client was building a new house from scratch. She wanted help in choosing colors for every part of the exterior from paving stones to roof. She knew she didn't want the usual taupe or gray house that is so common today. We picked the siding first. She showed me two variations of terra-cotta that she was thinking about. In my opinion one was too yellow-orange, the other a strong deep rich color that we chose. Once [...]

Making a Screened Porch Inviting

By |2018-12-19T17:01:13-05:00July 29th, 2015|Case Studies, Exteriors|

A client called me to help choose colors for a screened porch she was remodeling and painting to make it more inviting and more harmonious with the rest of the house. The porch came off of an open dining room/kitchen  with glass doors on one entire wall. The ceiling was a beamed wood ceiling and the client hated the closed in dark feeling the beams created. She investigated how to get rid of the beams without damaging the structure. The first order of business was to structurally remove the beams and open the [...]

Warm Tones for Exterior of House This new house in a traditional style with a Southern flair and lots of architectural detail was recently completed and painted. All the trim is white and roof black. This gives whatever color you choose for the painted siding a crisp clean look. We chose a creamy golden beige, one of Benjamin Moore's Historical Colors, HC35, Powell Buff. This house has a front porch and a covered back deck. We wanted to use a different color for the ceilings of both porches. We felt a [...]

It was a corner property and the house would be seen from the front and side. It is in a neighborhood with lots of charming older houses. The couple knew they did not want the typical taupe/beige color scheme. They wanted something a little different that would stand out from the rest but look inviting and classic There was a lot of wood trim on the [...]

A Different Color For A Front Door

By |2018-12-19T15:28:54-05:00January 17th, 2013|Case Studies, Dark Colors, Exteriors|

Continuing the topic of exterior colors, a client recently wanted to do something a little different with their front door. The house was grey with white trim. The door was also painted white. They wanted to make the door different but not garish. Purple Door on Gray House We chose Benjamin Moore 1414 Super Nova which is a dark purple/grey. It is a very deep, rich, and muted color that harmonizes beautifully with the grey shingles. Choosing a color for your front door that is a little off the beaten [...]
