Long Distance Color Consulting (Part I)

A client called me to help choose colors for a house they were building in the Adirondacks. It was too far to travel and we decided to do what I call, "long distance color consulting". That is we chose colors not on the actual site. It's a challenge because colors change in different lighting and all the things the client chose like tiles, bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinets, etc. were things I would see only in pictures. She did have a few actual samples of tile for me to see which was very [...]

Soft and Lovely Color Palettes

By |2018-12-19T14:30:34+00:00August 24th, 2014|Accent Colors, Dark Colors, Light Colors, Neutral Palette|

I was recently sent a 2014 special issue by Sherwin Williams about their paint and colors. Included in this brochure were several color palettes. Two of them stuck me as not only beautiful but usable in many home or business situations. Although some of the palettes were bright and colorful I could not imagine using them in most homes. I believe that most people want soft soothing colors on their walls to function as a background rather than shout out "look at me". I have found that most of my clients want to come into their homes and feel [...]

A Guest Bedroom and Bath

By |2018-12-19T14:32:12+00:00July 25th, 2014|Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Case Studies, Neutral Palette|

This lovely new 4 bedroom house had one of the bedrooms designated as a guest bedroom. It was across the hall from a bathroom that was shared with the two other children's bedrooms. In other words the bath would be used by children as well as adults who would be the guests. The clients did not want to create a bath designed for children that looked juvenile but wanted something more sophisticated that would be appropriate for guests as well as their children as they grew older. The furniture in the guest [...]

A New House

By |2018-12-20T17:25:59+00:00May 20th, 2014|Case Studies, Dining Rooms, Hallways, Living and Family Rooms, Neutral Palette|

This was new construction for a large formal Colonial style house. It had wide crown and floor molding throughout and wainscoting in the entrance hall and dining room. We wanted a unified, bright, crisp, clean look for all the molding throughout the house. We chose Sherwin Williams 7006 Extra White in a semi gloss finish. It is a soft white without any yellow tone. It looks great next to all the colors we chose for the rooms. Upon entering the main hall you saw a beautiful curved staircase. The clients wanted a warm inviting feeling when you came in. This [...]

A Color Palette For a New House (Part IV) More Bathrooms

By |2018-12-21T09:38:34+00:00February 24th, 2014|Bathrooms, Case Studies, Dark Colors, Light Colors, Neutral Palette|

The house I have been discussing has three full baths. I showed the master bath in the last blog. Now I want to talk about the guest bathroom on the first floor and another bathroom on the second floor. The guest bathroom can be entered from the main hallway or through the guest room. From the hallway you can also enter the laundry room which is adjacent to the bathroom. The same floor tiles were used in both rooms so we decided to paint them the same color. Deep Rich Brown [...]

A Color Palette For A New House (Part III)

By |2018-12-21T09:39:23+00:00February 11th, 2014|Accent Colors, Bedrooms, Case Studies, Neutral Palette|

We are now going upstairs to the second floor of the new house where we find the bedrooms, more baths and a home office. As you may recall, this house was being painted before furniture and fabrics were chosen so the palette had to be neutral. The only colors we had to work with were floors and carpeting. The master bedroom suite had a light beige, off white, carpeting and we chose Benjamin Moore 990 Hampshire Taupe for the walls. We also chose window shades in a similar tone. This color has [...]
